How We Are Organized

Local Chapters & Associations

Membership in The Order of Saint Luke is in a local chapter or association, if one exists, or more often in the General Chapter. The local chapters are headed by a Prior (President), and sub-Prior (Vice-President), with optional offices of Chancellor (Secretary/Treasurer), Chaplain, and Formation Officer. Chapters may establish such other offices as may serve their needs.

Many locations do not have a local chapter; in this instance, members are ncouraged to find like-minded Christians to explore the Order and discern a calling. Where two members can meet at least annually together, a formal Association may be formed. Once the Association gains at least 5 members, the association may petition the Council for charter a Chapter. The building of a Chapter is a slow process of discernment, servant ministry, and labor.

There are over twenty chapters around the world. Many chapters are found on the campuses of seminaries and theological colleges. Seminary chapters are usually sponsored by the professor of liturgy or homiletics, with careful assistance from members of the Order who reside in the surrounding area and support from their Provincial Companion (see below.)

The "Cyber Chapter" is not actually a chartered chapter, but is the name given to an online discussion group sposored and moderated by the Order. Many members of the Order participate, and many members of the Order became memebrs after participating first in the discussions. We welcome potential new members to investigate the Cyber Chapter.

PROVINCES

In recognition of the ecumenical nature of the Order of Saint Luke, we are organized into regions (or “provinces”) rather than along United Methodist jurisdictional lines. The Abbot appoints Provincial Companions to serve as “regional shepherds” of the Order’s various Chapters and Associations. The officer responsible for spiritual formation and leadership across the provinces is the “Provincial General.” This organization is designed to improve communication and accountability among the brothers and sisters of a dispersed order.

The Provincial General has responsibility for chapter organization, chartering, and semi-annual reports on chapter activities. Provincial Companions assist the Provincial General in making contact with chapters in their region and following up on lapsed members. Occasionally, they may be called upon to help chapters in the formation stage.

The current Provincial General is Br. George R. Crisp, O.S.L. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The Abbot and The Council

The Council of the General Chapter (The Council) is composed of the elected and appointed officers of the Order, plus any Canons of the Order as may be named, a representative (with vote) from each properly chartered Local Chapter and Association, and the immediate past Abbot. The Council exercises legislative functions between plenary meetings of the General Chapter. The Council meets semi-annually, in the spring and fall, prior to the plenary meeting at retreat or convocation. You can think of the Council as our "board of directors" for the purposes of policy and operation of the Order.

Our Abbot is elected from our members by the members, in keeping with the traditions of religious orders. The Abbot leads our Order for a period of four years, assisted by three other elected officers, the Prior General, the Chancellor General, and the Provincial General. In addition, the Abbot, in consultation with the Council, appoints or creates such other offices as needed.

The current Abbot and Councilar officers (other than the Priors) are:

Elected by the Members of the Order:

Abbot: Br. Daniel Benedict (e-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

Appointed by the Abbot in consultation with the Council:

The Corporation

The Order of Saint Luke is a corporation of the State of New Jersey. The Council elects three trustees to fill such offices as may be required by law. Each trustee shall serve for a term of three years, with terms expiring in consecutive years.
